HubbalLi: The Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubballi, has been chosen by the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) as a clinical trial center, making the institute of the first and only government facility in Karnataka which is between a handful of such campuses throughout the country.
Clinical trials are carried out to study any drug or vaccine impact.
Dr.
Ram S Kaulgud, the main researcher of the clinical trial at KimS, told TOI that this development was a hair in KimS hat.
“Previously, we used to carry out global clinical trials sponsored by several private companies and the number of trials was very lacking,” he said.
“We have conducted a trial of asthma and also do placentrial, which helps treat covid patients with plasma therapy in collaboration with ICMR and we care for more than 100 covid patients with plasma therapy,” he added.
ICMR has invited applications from medical colleges to start clinical trials after setting several conditions.
The opportunity to learn from limited clinical trials in government universities because most of them do not have a clinical trial center.
KIMS options can be a gift for medical students to learn and hone their skills in clinical trials and help staff in medical colleges to improve their skills in clinical trials, Kaulgud said.
“We are now more confident and happy that we can do more clinical trials in our college with ICMR support.
If there is an important experiment that needs to be done to find a solution for deadly diseases or viruses, ICMR will provide the first preference to KIMS Clinical, than approaching private universities, “he said.
“With the available staff and infrastructure, we can certainly achieve success in clinical trials in the coming days,” he added.
