WASHINGTON: A member of the Top US parliament on Thursday was described as “embarrassing” China chose a PLA soldier, which was part of the military command who attacked the Indian army in Galwan Valley in 2020, as a Torchbearer for the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The Senator of the Republic of Jim Risch, a member of the strong US Senate foreign relations committee, also said that the US would continue to support India sovereignty.
“It was shameful that Beijing chose the Torchbearer for the 2022 Olympics which was part of the military command that attacked India by 2020 and applied genocide against Uyghurs.
The US will continue to support Uyghur freedom and Indian sovereignty,” Risch tweeted.
China on Wednesday the Qi Fabao, Commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), who was injured during the June 2020 border battle with the Indian army in the Galwan Valley in East Ladakh, as a Torchbearer for relay.
Qi took the flame from Wang Meng, Jago Speed Speed Short Chinese Olympics, in Winter Olympic Park, the Global Times newspaper managed by the government.
In New Delhi, India on Thursday announced that the Charge D”s affair at the Indian Embassy in Beijing would not attend the opening ceremony or closing of the 2022 Winter Olympics above China in honor of the military commander involved in his Galwan Valle clash as a Torchbearer for Mega Sporting program.
A spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs Arinindam Bagchi described Chinese actions to respect Commander as “regrettable”.
Affaires Charge D’India at the Beijing Embassy will not attend the opening ceremony or closing of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, Bagchi said on the media briefing.
Twenty Indian Army personnel set their lives in Galwan clashes which marked the most serious military conflicts between India and China in decades.
In February last year, China officially acknowledged that five military officers and Chinese soldiers were killed in Galwan’s clashes with Indian soldiers even though he widespread believed that the death toll was higher.
Beijing became the host of the winter Olympics in the midst of diplomatic boycott by the US, the European Union and several Western countries over alleged human rights violations in Xinjiang, including detention of more than one million men and women Uygur Muslims in camps.
