Guwahati: Scientists in Assam have achieved a major breakthrough by developing the next generation probiotics that have delivered the expectations of longevity and healthy aging among parents.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Nobel Laureate Elie Metchnikoff had proposed that healthy bacteria found in fermented milk products can promote healthy aging.
Hundreds of years later, the team of scientists at the Institute of the Advanced Study of the Central Government in Science and Technology (IASST) in Guwahati, was led by MoJ scientists R Khan, and Prof.
Ashis K.
Mukherjee, Director of the Institute, in collaboration with Prof.
MC Kalita from Gahati University, and Research on Bachelor of Arun Kumar and Tulsi Joishy have found the next generation probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus Plantarum JBC5, from dairy products that look promising in promoting healthy aging.
The team has developed yogurt, using this probiotic bacteria, which can be consumed to get all these health benefits and increase life expectancy.
Study, “The potential of the Probiotic Lactobacillus Plantarum JBC5 increases long and healthy life by modulating antioxidative, default immunity, and serotonin signal pathways in Elegans Caenorhabditis”, recently published in a highly respected peer journal, ratified the findings.
Khan said that bacteria showed an increase of 27.81% in the life span of model organisms, Elegans Caenorhabditis (a kind of worm), accompanied by a healthy aging excellence by providing an increase in immunity to pathogenic infections, increasing learning skills and, integritas intensification, and oxidative stress tolerance.
“Instead, it significantly reduces the accumulation of body fat and inflammation, which will also help reduce aging factors among humans.
About 70% of the worm genes that we experiment are similar to humans,” he added.
Mukherjee said probiotics promised to delay ages related diseases such as obesity, decreased cognitive function, and increased immunity to parents.
Patent has been filed to claim the discovery.
Mukherjee hopes that probiotics are immediately commercialized so that the technology produced by laboratories can reach people.
The advancement of medical science has increased life expectancy and causes rapid growth in aging population.
The United Nations has predicted that one in every 11 people will be more than 65 years old in 2050.
However, researchers at the IASST argue that aging is generally associated with a higher risk of age-related health problems, such as obesity, neurodegenerative disease (Parkinson., Alzheimer’s , cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory intestinal disease.
Thus, they say it raises fears in populated countries such as India where this disease often occurs.
