Silchar: A group of 22 Bangladesh citizens, who were submitted in various Assam prisons, were deported to their country through the Sutarkandi International border checkpoint in Karimanjitas on Saturday.
According to a senior official, Karimanj’s border police escorted all of the 22 people to Sutarkandi, 67 km from here, early on Saturday.
After the verification process, BSF and civilian officials and police from Assam handed over them to the Bangladeshi authorities in the afternoon.
In addition to Bangladesh officials and border guards Bangladesh personnel, relatives of Bangladesh men who were released were present at the place to welcome them back.
An official said Bangladesh citizen was arrested over the past few years with illegal allegations of entering India.
During interrogation, people said they came to the country to find work.
Two people were arrested in the southern salmara, one in Kamrup, one in Bongaigaon, three in Karimganj, two in Silchar, seven in goal, one in Nalbari, and five were arrested in Guwahati.
An official said they were tried in a local court under the existing law and sentenced to prison.
Those who returned on Saturday were residents of various Bangladesh districts, including Moulvibazar, Kurigram, Dinajpur, Chandpur, Patuakhali, Netrokona, Rajshahi, Thakurgaon, Tangail, Khulna, Madaripur, Habiganj, Sylhet, Dhaka, Kushtia and Naogaon.
Nearly 250 Bangladesh had been released from five prisons in Assam and two in Meghalaya and were sent home for the past few years, an official said.
