Amsterdam: A Dutch crime reporter who was shot in the head in a brash attack in Amsterdam center last week when he left a television studio died because of his wound on Thursday, his family said in a statement.
Reporter, Peter R de Vries, is 64.
“Peter has struggled to the end, but cannot win this battle,” the statement, which was brought by the Dutch broadcast news agency RTL news, said.
“We are very proud of him and at the same time not monked.” De Vries, a famous public figure in the Netherlands, was shot on the night of July 6, an interesting attack of the vast curse in a country where drugs and shootings related to drugs continued to increase over the past decade.
European leaders condemned the shooting, who also asked questions about safety for journalists.
The police arrested two men last week in connection with the attack after stopping them in the car on the nearest highway.
The police identified the suspects as a 35-year-old Polish citizen and a 21-year-old child from Rotterdam.
The police said they believed the younger man was a shooter.
The two suspects appeared in court in Amsterdam on Friday and still detained.
Ferd Grapperhaus, Minister of Justice Dutch, called De Vries “brave man” and said his death was “no less than a direct attack on our society.” De Vries, who has held a television crime show for almost two decades and has long been known in the Netherlands to resolve cold cases, saying he regularly accepts the threat of death.
The television show where de Vries appeared before he was shot last week did not show 9 July, after the threat of criminals who said they wanted to target studios using automatic weapons or rocket launchers, according to Dutch news media.
This event has continued his daily episode, but will be recorded elsewhere, the network reports.
De Vries began his journalist career in 1978 at De Telegraaf, a popular Dutch newspaper.
A decade later, he published a book about Beer Kidnapping Freddy Heineken.
He included many high profile cases, including the loss of youth Alabama 2005, Natalee Holloway, in Aruba, a Caribbean island which is part of the Netherlands; And a decade long investigation into the rape and murder of a 11-year-old boy, Nicky Verstappen.
His television show, “Peter R de Vries, crime reporter,” which began in 1995 and aired for 17 years, was his real breakthrough.
Recently, De Vries had established a foundation in hopes of completing the loss of Tanja Groen 1993, a young woman who disappeared on her way home from a party.
On Tuesday, Dutch public television aired a special program where viewers contributed hundreds of thousands of euros to the cause.
De Vries, who is also the director of the Law Office, has been an advisor for the past year to the key witness at the trial of the murder which was said to have been ordered by criminal organizations.
The main defendant in this case, Ridouan Taghi, who was accused of leading the organization, was arrested in Dubai in 2019.
Derk Wiersum, a lawyer for the same key witness in the trial, was killed in Amsterdam in 2019.
The witness was shot dead in 2018.
Amsterdam And other Dutch cities have become a scene of several shootings over the past decade where criminals have targeted each other or those who disturb their crimes.
The closest port of Rotterdam is one of the main gateways to import cocaine to Europe, and this country is a leader in the production of illegal amphetamines and metal crystals.
