Avgaria: Residents are installing a watch watch to try to save their homes from forest fires that destroy Greek Island Evia, determined to continue to involve them to evacuate.
The fire brigade was preparing to take the wind from Tuesday afternoon which could cause more turns on the second largest island of Greece, where the fire burned until the eighth day.
Another front in Peloponnese can also be revived.
The government will announce the relief steps to track quickly for those who have lost their homes and property – but for some villagers, leaving their homes to the flames that play the red sky is not an option.
“The police came and told us to evacuate the village of Avgaria but we could not, this is our property.
We can’t let our house burn,” said Ioannis Aggelopoulos, 55, who owned a car shop in Istiia, at the north end of the island.
“We haven’t slept in three days, we have slept in shifts.” Villager Ioanna MushiTioti, 59, joining patrols: “We are very scared, but we have to stay.” On Monday the Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsakakis apologized for the failure to handle forest fires that had been burned throughout the country for the past week when the authorities began to calculate the costs at the homes and livelihoods lost.
He will lead a cabinet meeting later on and his government will announce special relief steps for those who lose homes, agriculture and property.
On Monday he approved a budget of 500 million euros for the help of Evia and Attica region around Athens.
The sentinel-2 satellite image shows forest plots that are scorched by forest fires in Attica, Evia and Peloponnese, with the Athens National Observatory estimates that around 650,000 hectares have been burned in total until Sunday.
More than 500 fires have been burned throughout Greece, forcing the evacuation of dozens of villages and thousands of people.
Nearly 1,000 firefighters, nine airplanes and 200 vehicles have been sent to Greece from other European countries to help.
Mitsakotakis promised that forests destroyed by fires will be restored and climate defense will be built.
