Bengaluru: A group of Udupi students who have challenged the prohibition of headscarves in their institution on Monday urged Karnataka HC that they were allowed to cover their heads with Dupattas or institutions that matched the uniforms who were prescribed while in the classroom.
Prayer was made in an interchesterutor’s application that was seeking clarification on the temporary commandments passed by the full court bench on February 10, Report P Vasanth Kumar.
Another application submitted by students seeks to postpone hearing at this petition after assembly elections are completed in Uttar Pradesh & other countries.
Most students follow the commands while the court about the headscarf: officials in most schools, students are asked to remove the headscarf before entering the place.
This direction is in accordance with the temporary commandment of the High Court which says educational institutions can be reopened but no religious clothes are permitted.
The court direction is limited to schools and colleges that have prescribed uniforms for students.
The Ministry of Education officials said most Muslim students obeyed the temporary commandment of HC by removing the hijab before entering the class except for 13 students from the Government Middle School in the Shivamogga District which boycotted the SSLC preparation exam (grade 10) after being asked to remove the hijab.
When the teacher stopped the students and asked them to remove their headscarves before entering the school, officials said the students refused requests and demanded that they were allowed to write the exam.
Teachers and school management offers separate spaces where they can write a test without headscarves, but in vain.
Parents of girls support their children and take them home, say they cannot attend classes without hijab.
At Mandya, the argument broke out between parents and a teacher outside the Rotary School when the last one asked students to release their headscarves before entering the campus.
