Guwahati: A group of animal lovers on Sunday held a protest that demanded an independent investigation into a state that led to the death of a woman’s giraffe at the Assam zoo cum botanical garden in Guwahati on Friday.
Ashwini Kumar, a forest officer of the zoo division, said Prima Facie, the death of the giraffe seemed to have died because he was weak.
The carcass has been sent for an autopsy and the report is awaited.
Rajkumar Baishya, an animal lover and Secretary General of Siriakhana Surakha Mancha (a forum that raised his voice to protect zoo animals), said, “This is not the first time a dead animal in a mysterious state.
Nearly 1,200 animals have died at the zoo since 2017.
Every time the zoo authority has given several strange statements.
We suspect them to hide facts.
“Therefore, he demanded the authority of the state zoo to make public CCTV recordings so that people knew how the giraffe died in the zoo.
“We believe the giraffe died of negligence of the authorities.
How can the dead animal accidentally?” He asked.
He alleged that most animals who died for many years were brought from different states as part of an animal exchange program among zoos.
Giraffe, named Rongili, was taken to Assam in December 2019 from Patna Zoo and the male giraffe was taken from the MySore Zoo, with permission from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).
Giraffe was brought to Assam as part of an animal exchange program after eight years of gap.
The Assam Zoo thought of carrying two zebras from the MySore Zoo at the beginning of next year.
