Nagpur: The Maharashtra Forest Department has decided to get rid of at least 12 captive elephants stored in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) and Gadchiroli by sending it to the rescue center managed by Reliance’s Radhe Krishna Elephne Trust in Jamnagar.
Speaking with Toi, Sunil Limaye, Head of Forest Conservator (Wildlife), Maharashtra, confirmed the move and said, “In the first phase, all six elephants in the Botezari Tadoba camp will shift at the end of this month.
In the second phase, six more than Gadchiroli – Three of each of Patanil in Allapalli and Kamlapur in the Sironcha Division – will be transported in January 2022.
“There are 20 elephants of prisoners who have the Ministry of Forestry in Vidarbha.
These include seven in Kamlapur, three in Patanil in the Alllapalli division, six in Tadoba, and four in Melghat, which is being used for tourism purposes.
“All elephants given are not trained,” said Limaye.
Reliance is preparing a zoo at 280 hectares of land near the Reliance refinery at Moti Khavdi near Jamnagar.
This will accommodate 100 different species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
Possible some animals can be used for zoos, said sources.
Previously, one Leopard and three Sloth Bears were sent to the zoo wrapped in Reliance from Dr.
Prakash Amte ‘Ark’ in Hemalkasa in Gadchiroli.
Gadchiroli Conservator of Forests (CF) Kishore Malekar said three elephants in Patanil were old.
Two retired, while someone was arrested from Kolhapur during the conflict.
This elephant is used for forestry operations but is now no longer used.
“These animals will shift in January, the transportation costs will be borne by the Jasnagar Rescue Center.
