Mumbai: Bajaj Auto Ltd on Wednesday said it would establish electric vehicle manufacturing facilities in Akurdi in Pune with an investment of Rs 300 Crore.
This facility, where the work has begun, will have the capacity to produce 5,00,000 electric vehicles (EVs) per year and serve the domestic and export market, the company said in the release.
The first vehicle of the new unit, spreads more than half a million square space, is expected to be launched in June 2022.
This unit will employ around 800 personnel.
Akurdi is a site from the original chailable scooter factory.

“This alignment reflects our belief that light electric vehicles for sustainable urban mobility is an idea that the time finally arrives,” Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, said EVS in India and abroad.
Investments made by Bajaj Auto will be added with A number of vendors, which will invest further Rs 250 Crore (U to 33 million), said the company.
This new unit will have the latest and automatic robot manufacturing system for all, including logistics and material handling, fabrication and painting, assembly and quality assurance.
This system has been designed for a flexible mixture of products while remembering the best worker ergonomics and maximum process efficiency, he said.
The unit in Akurdi is located together with the Bajaj Auto R & D center for growing larger collaboration, which leads to a faster-time-to-market and must change facilities to be a hub for design, development, and manufacture complete range of electric vehicles, according to the statement.
