Mangaluru: The Govenment Lady Goschen Hospital will soon have a human milk bank, the first of its kind in the district.
The purpose of the bank is to ensure that every baby receives human milk as early as possible.
Dr.
Durgaprasad Mr., a hospital medical supervisor, told Ti Bank being built with the support of Rotary Club Mangaluru through a global grant project at a cost of Rs 45 Lakh.
“The aim is to give a premature infant of a low weight, the baby whose mother cannot provide adequate milk and infants from mothers because of many reasons with ASI from a bank that will only be accepted after testing of all types of infections.
This will help reduce the risk of infection and improve Their immunity.
“Archie Menezes from the Rotary Club along with pediatrician Dr.
Shantaram Balike took a special interest in the project which is currently in its implementation phase and is likely to start operating in February.
The human milk bank will appear next to the NICU and RMO Dr.
Balakrishna Rao has been appointed as Nodal officer along with the obstetrician panel, nurse staff and counselors.
The club was in talks with Dr.
Sreenath to provide training to staff after the equipment was installed.
The hospital has also submitted a request to the district government and the state government to appoint full staff, said Dr.
Durgaprasad.
“After the human milk bank was established, the next big challenge was to push donors.
Mothers must voluntarily advance to donate milk Awareness and in turn helped reduce neonatal deaths in the tertiary reference center which recorded an average of around 750 shipments per month, “he added.
