Brussels: Belgium will turn off the seven nuclear reactors in 2025 but will not close the door on new generation nuclear technology, according to the agreement reached Thursday by the coalition government.
The government’s source told AFP negotiations throughout the night including an agreement “an investment of around 100 million euros ($ 113 million) in a small modular reactor”.
The press conference will take place at the Office of the Prime Minister’s office at 1000 GMT to present details.
Progressively removing nuclear power has been enshrined in Belgium law since 2003.
The final date is 2025, the government’s target is currently committed to meeting when it is held in October 2020.
But this problem has divided the greens coalition of seven-party governing, socialist liberal and prime Minister Alexander De Croo.
The French Liberal Mr Party argues to fully leave nuclear power, the strategy proposed by the Green Energy Minister Flemish Tinne van der Strafeten.
They said some Belgian nuclear capacity should now be maintained when the new gas-fired power station planned to secure energy supply is too polluting.
Belgian broadcasters RTBF reported that the minister’s meeting agreed to invest in “renewable energy and carbon neutral” – including new generation of nuclear power.
The government’s source told AFP the budget to invest in technology has been prepared.
This source adds that compromise maintains “Scenario A” Minister of Energy and “confirms the investment mechanism applied to replace nuclear power today, which is worn”.
Nuclear power has also divided other UE member countries as blocks of fighting including and natural gas in the list of sustainable energy sources of blocks that qualify for investment.
