Chennai: On the night of December 25, 1974, a local event reached for the national spotlight.
It was a year after the death of E V Ramasamy-Periyar.
DRAVIDAR KAZHAGUR, then led by E V R Maniammai, mortal wife, has gathered to celebrate Ravanalela, an event held in retaliation to Ramlila which is popular in the north.
Each Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana burned as a slogan ‘Ravanan Vazga’ rented air.
It is the only Ravanalela to be held.
The symbolic fight Arya vs Dravidian marks the confrontendent politics of Tamil Nadu at that time.
“It’s not just a fictional fight, but the efforts of cultural conquest,” said the DK leader, K Veeramani, now 87.
In Churn politics, a piece of history, DK headquarters in Madras, slipped from view.
When you appear from an egmore metro station and cross the high street poonamallee to enter e v k salai, you can’t miss it.
“DK HQ was previously shown by the tram.
When the tram service ended, it was bought and entered into the fold of Periyar in 1956.
Then it was known as Periyar Thidal,” said DK Treasurer V Kumarsan.
There are more history in two strange km radius from the Eggore Metro station.
For smooth connectivity and integration, the station is pulled into so that commuters can take foot bridges to the edge platform from the Eggore train station and also go out for trains out of the city.
When you appear from the station, you are treated to colonial deployment.
To the right of the Poonamallee stretch to the central station, several hundred steps away are the Church of St Andrew or Kirk, built in 1818 to serve the Scottish community in Madras.
Kirk 111-foot wheel tower is the highest in Chennai.
“In the church, the blue dome was formed from the pottery cone to give its curvature.
The work was credited to workers from Tanjore,” said Kirk Congregation member Gabriel Sathiyanathan, 74.
A large place holding a surprise – the remnants of the school, the beginning of Madras Christian College at Tambaram.
One kilometer outside the church is a state-arts government college, located at the British English Revivalistic Architecture Style Indo-Saracenic England.
It was founded in 1850 by Alexander hunter surgeon.
Former Debi Preport Principal Roy Choudhary sculpt wins for labor and Gandhi at Marina Beachfront.
Talking about the nobility and prosperity, pudu, about 2 km away, has a secret hidden underneath which is bad.
In the mid to the end of the eighteenth century, some rich Indians left the ‘Black City’ (The Old George Town) and moved to Pudupet, across the coout river which separated him from the Poonamallee High Road.
Among them were Cancipuram Paccaiyappamutaliariaries, better known as Mudaliyar Pachaiyappa, the generators who wrote Pachaiyappa College.
What is left today is the path named after, C P M Road.
The first luxury residential area is now ‘Chor Bazaar’, filled with shops for auto parts.
“Chathiram was gone.
There was no track,” said S Ravi, 48, a milk supplier.
Chathiram tiles were pulled down for a few decades ago, he explained.
There are several other landmarks inside and around Egmore, some stand in style, others are not striking, and some have disappeared.
Definitely worth the trip on the metro to find.
