LONDON: A police officer was imprisoned for life on Thursday to kidnap Sarah Everard’s marketing executive on Jalan London as he walked home, then raped and killed him in a surprising case and stirred protest over women.
Wayne Cozens (48) an officer serving London who has maintained a diplomatic place, has used his position to stop Everard, the old Bailey court heard.
Coumen forced Everard (33) to be a rental car when he walked home after visiting a friend in South London on 3.
His body was found in Woodland about 50 miles away in Southeast England.
A post-mortem concluded that he had died as a result of neck compression.
All of his life sentences mean he did not have the chance of parole.
“Nothing can make everything better, no one can bring Sarah back, but knowing that she will be imprisoned forever bringing a little relieved,” said the Everard family in a statement.
“Wayne Cozens held a trust position as a police officer and we were angry and sick so he harassed this belief to charm Sarah to his death.” The murder encouraged public demonstrations and the outpouring of anger from women who had told their own experiences and fears would come out alone at night.
A witness saw Everard handcuffed before his kidnapping and police investigating the case said he might have used the Covid-19 protocol as a reason to catch him wrongly.
Judge Adrian Fulford said Cousen had long planned sexual attacks of violence against victims who had not been chosen which he meant to force his prisoner.
“I haven’t doubt a little that the defendant used his position as a police officer to force him with a completely false pretext into the car he had rented for this purpose,” Fulford said in a punishment.
‘Shame’ in the metropolitan police police, who investigated the murder and for whom Cozens worked, said it was “sick, angry and destroyed” by his crime.
Cressida Dick’s Commissioner has apologized to the Everard family.
“Our police are there to protect us – and I know that the officers will share in our surprise and destruction with the total betrayal of this task,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.
The British police watchdog looked for police failure to investigate an indecent exposure incident related to Couzens in 2015, and two accusations like that in February this year.
Harriet opposition lawmakers Harriet Harman asked Dick to resign.
“Sarah Everard just walked home.
Women must be able to trust the police not afraid of them.
Women’s trust in the police will be destroyed,” said Harman on Twitter.
In a statement outside the court, Dick did not answer the question about his own position.
“His actions were dirty, the betrayal of all the police meant.
What he did was unthinkable and terrible …
This man had been embarrassing at the meeting (police),” he said, describing him as “one of the most terrible events in Indonesia 190 years history from Metropolitan Police Service “.
“There are no words that can fully express anger and extraordinary sadness that we all feel about what happened to Sarah.
I am very sorry.”
