Chennai: A man who posed as a volunteer Covid stole four rulers from a house after diverting attention to two children in Thirumullaivoyal on Monday.
The incident occurred at Ganapati Nagar when the parents of Loganathan children and Pushpa went to work, police said.
Parents usually leave children – Manikandan, 11, and Monish, 9, –alone at home, give them cellphones to attend online classes.
Around 10:30 a.m., when the classes took place, a middle-aged man reached the house and asked children if their parents took a covid test.
He told them that he was a volunteer of Chennai Corporation.
He told them that they needed to verify some details about Covid vaccination.
He asked them to bring their father’s adhaar and mother’s cards.
He did not allow children to call their parents.
When children go inside to find a card, he also joins them in the search.
While children were busy checking the card, he stole four sovereign gold chains from almah.
He then told them that he could return at night after their parents returned from the office and examined it.
Loganathan, who reached the house at night, was surprised to find lost jewelry.
Even when Loganathan looks for jewelry, children tell them about a man who enters the house.
Based on his complaint, Tirumullaivoyal police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspect.
Because he wore a mask, children couldn’t think of his face.
The police have obtained several CCTV recordings from the region.
Police sources said that the man targeted home to fully know that children would be alone.
They have urged public members not to fall prey to such tactics.
They also asked parents to notify children about the new modus operandi and not to entertain outsiders at home.
