Chennai: Towards Ayudha Puja, the price of flowers and fruits skyrocketed in the local market throughout the city on Wednesday.
While the products are twice as expensive in the retail market, it costs a lot of fruit varieties and flowers crashing or watching only marginal revisions in the Koyambedu wholesale market complex (KWMC), where vendors source of goods for retail sales.
However, local vendors quote high prices on the wholesale market for hiking levels at night festivals.
Marigold’s price, the most popular interest purchased during Ayudha Puja, plunged on the wholesale market because it was flooded with flowers from the Salem and Krishnagiri district and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh.
Marigold accounted for around 60% of all flowers arriving in the city.
Koyambedu receives around 500 tons of marigold on one day which produces prices falling between Rs 60 and Rs 140 per kg depending on quality.
However, retail vendors sell ‘Oru Muzham’ or 1FT Marigold for Rs 30 to RS 40.
Vendors can make a bouquet of about 10 feet only with 1kg Marigold.
Assuming that the best quality interest sourced and added to other input costs, 1ft Marigold should only cost Rs 20 to RS 25 in retail stores, said S Mookaiah, President of the Chennai Flower Traders Association Koyambedu.
“Prices go down on Wednesday for arrival (big charge) Marigold thanks to the rain.
Customers who fail will force people to reduce the volume of interest they want to buy.
This is clear because at least 10 tons remain unsold in Koyambedu,” he said, as he added that Farmers will face the burden of the loss.
The price of fruits is also above the city.
One kilogram of Mosambi cost Rs 35 to RS 45 in Koyambedu, but twice or even more expensive in the local market with the cheapest RS 70.
Domegrowning Rs 160 to Rs 290 A Kg on the roadside and supermarket.
The two fruits were cheaper just a few days ago.
S Srinivasan, President of the Fruits Chennai commission association, said the fruit price was stable for a week in Koyambedu except for Mosambi, whose greet prices increased by Rs 10 at RSPA.
“The market witnessed fast sales on Wednesday.
Unlike last year, more fruits arrived this Ayudha Puja season,” he added.
