Madurai: The 44-year-old police chief connected to the Vilakkuthoon B1 police station in Madurai died on Wednesday after a 110-year-old building in New Veli Street suddenly collapsed.
According to the police source, Head of Coples C Saravanan (44) and his colleague K Kannan (49) had conducted patrol tasks on Tuesday night.
In early Wednesday, around 12:05 a.m., the two police officers stood outside the closed shop on Jalan Veli Timur near Nelpettai.
Suddenly, a 110-year-old building in dilapidated condition on a collapsed and debris crashed on them.
With another police on the task of the nearby night patrol, they saved the two police officers who suffered severe injuries and rushed to the Rajaji government hospital.
Saravanan was declared dead by a doctor.
Meanwhile, Head Constable Kannan is currently under treatment at a private hospital with an injury to his head and limbs.
Vilakkugginal police on the other hand investigated the incident and the owner of the building was also questionable.
Police Commissioner, Madurai City, Prem Anand Sinha examined the collapse of the building site on Wednesday morning.
