MADRID: Spain reported 12,345 new Coronavirus infections and eight deaths on Thursday, with ministry of health data showing a daily increase this week at the highest level since mid-April, partly because the Delta variant is more contagious.
The rate of infection measured for the last 14 days rose to 134 cases per 100,000 people from 117 on Wednesday, accelerating the increase that began in mid-June after the level reached the lowest level since August, around 90 cases per 100,000.
Driven by a decrease in infection in recent months when vaccination took steam, the government had limited relaxed and last Saturday lifting the blanket obligation to wear outdoor masks.
A record of 747,589 people vaccinated on Thursday, leaving nearly 38% of the population fully inoculated.
Thursday’s figures took the cumulative total of Covid-19 cases in Spain to 3,821,305 while the death toll reached 80,883.
