Chandigarh: For online fraudsters, plastic money is a real thing! In such a way that their mistakes have surpassed other cybercrime recorded from January 1 to December 11 in the city.
In more than 5,000 complaints – 5,556 right – Cyber cells are accepted in almost 12 months, a quarter of them (1,330) related to debit card fraud and credit where the defendant spends money by getting PIN, OTPS and other details of their victims.
Furthermore, in the list is vulgar message and threats on the telephone and email hacking – 1,066.
Then come 956 complaints of cheating when buying and selling products through OLX, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
A total of 708 complaints are fraud with the pretext of providing work, winning online lotteries and providing loans and 458 hacking Facebook / Instagram IDs and harassment on social media.
Cyber cells received 186 complaints related to transactions through UPI in three months.
Most people who are deceived to share OTPS are not experienced in using online wallets, according to experts and cyber police.
The police suggest people must be aware when they have not made online transactions through Paytm or other wallets, they will not get OTP.
Cyber Cell submitted 65 firs from January to 11 December compared to 80 in 2020, when 6,537 complaints were received.
4,793 complaints were received and 35 firs submitted in 2019 and 3,167 complaints and 35 firs in 2018.
Police said investigating cyber fraud cases consumed time and was a long process.
“We face problems like taking into account account details from banks and telecommunications companies.
Sometimes, this entity requires a lot of time in providing information,” police said.
Cyber cell has 70 police officers, including DSP, one inspector, five sub-inspectors and 10 assistant sub-inspectors.
The proposal to prepare separate cyber cell police offices is waiting with administration since 2016.
