New Delhi: Transgender has a separate toilet because Metro Delhi makes provisions to help them with unrestriance access to the toilet at the station.
Delhi Metro has made provisions to enable them to access separate toilets at their stations, which until now are intended for Divyajans.
“In its efforts to provide safe space and prevent gender discrimination against transgender, Delhi Metro based on priority has established its existing toilet which only means to Divynagjans so far, to be accessed by transgender too,” said a Metro Delhi official.
At present, there are 347 separate special toilets (other than ordinary toilets for other passengers) at the metro station scattered on the network.
To guide the transgender to this toilet, bilingual boards (English and Hindi both) along with symbols for “people with disabilities” and “transgender” have been installed adjacent to this toilet.
“In addition, separate toilet provisions for them, each transgender who wants to use gender-based toilets in accordance with the identified gender will also continue to do so,” officially added.
DMRC is also in the process of reflecting on how to identify a special location to provide separate public toilet facilities at the upcoming station in Phase-IV.
The provisions of Part 22 of the Transgender Act (Rights Protection), 2019, also mandate adequate welfare measures for transgender people in all public buildings including public toilet facilities.
