Vadodara: Too many things that are bad, they say, including things that are generally considered beneficial for health.
Like multivitamin tablets and zinc supplements that promise to increase your immunity, but overdose can take you to feared black fungal infections or mukormycosis (mm).
And the list also includes overabundance in steam inhalation too! The case in hand is Rohit Baria, 60 years old, a retired school week of Vadodara, who was infected with Covid in May and recovered after 10 days of hospitalization.
But three weeks later, he developed MM symptoms in June.
During treatment, Baria told the doctors that he continued to emerge on multi-vitamin tablets to keep the immune level high, but the excess use was very donated.
“Even though he was given a steroid for Covid treatment, his blood sugar was not too high to cause black mushrooms.
Excessive multi-vitamin pills that contain iron and zinc seem to be one of the reasons behind MM.
He also claimed to have taken too much inhalation Steam, “said Dr.
Neel Thakkar, a Pulmonologist based in Vadodara.
“Like Thakkar, many people, infected with MM, have been found to take a dose of uncontrolled iron and zinc tablets.
The excessive intake of this pill increases iron and zinc in the blood and provides an ideal environment for black mushrooms to develop,” said Thakkar to Ti.
He added that in addition to various studies on the causes behind the occurrence of Mukormycosis and the British medical journal (BMJ) also mentioned excessive multi-vitamins as one reason that led to black fungal infections.
An article published in BMJ in June this year has suggested to avoid the use of iron and zinc supplements for management of Covid-19 and also to reduce the use of inhalation steam that is too large.
“After recovering, many covid patients take steam several times a day.
But too many steam burns the mucosa protect the layer in the nose and allows black fungus to grow easily in the sinuses.
Mushrooms then spread to other parts,” said Dr.
Parth Rana, Retina and Acular Trauma Surgeons from Ahmedabad.
Dr.
Parita Pandya Shah, an ENT specialist in Vadodara, said, “A 32-year-old patient from Godhra who has recovered from Covid is not a diabetic steroid or given and he gets MM.
He said that he used to do excessive steam inhalation after the recovery Damaging the mucosal layer and possibly causing black fungi.
“” Unfortunately, he died during treatment.
I have notified all my patients not to go for home treatment and avoid too much steam inhalation and iron popping and zinc tablets, “he added.
Surat-based infectious disease specialists, Dr.
Pratik Savaj, in fact, is part of research conducted to ensure various causes of mm.
“We are studying the role of zinc and iron overdoses in causing mukormycosis.
I personally stop prescribing multi-vitamin pills with zinc and iron to my patients,” Savaj added.
