Coimbatore: Minister of Forest K Ramachandran on Thursday urged people to encourage children to plant trees on their birthday to improve forest cover.
Speaking at an event organized by Rotary Club Coimbatore to annoy 26 farmers, the minister said that the state government plans to increase forest cover from 23.8% to 33% in 10 years.
“Every year, three to four Nirlings must be planted to reach the target.

M Krishnaeorthy, a farmer from Pannimadai Village, was chosen as an extraordinary farmer for 2021 for his contribution to integrated agricultural practices.
Krishnameorthy, who practiced agriculture at 4.5 hectares, turned to organic farming seven years ago.
“People must take integrated organic and agricultural farms to reduce input costs and increase income,” he said.
“I plant plants including coconut, arecanut and bananas and maintain fish, original chicken, duck, goat, and cows,” he said.
“I get no less than Rs 10 lakh a year through integrated agriculture.
About 10,000 people visit my farm every year to learn the basics.
The Indian Agriculture Research Council – Krishi Vigyan Kendra has made me a main coach in integrated agriculture,” Krishnameorthy added.
