Explained: Why is Apple and Ericsson in a big legal battle and the impact on the iPhone

Apple is currently involved in legal disputes with Swedish-based technology giants Ericsson.
The problem in the heart is for royalty payments to use a 5G wireless patent on the iPhone.
Here we explain what a big legal battle between the two giants is about: what are the problems between Apple and Ericsson? Back in 2015, Apple and Ericsson have signed a license contract for telecommunications patents.
The contract ended in 2022 and Apple reportedly did not update the license.
All devices require a patent license known as standard-essential patents (Sep).
The global agreement is there that the license for the patent must be under the frand requirements – which means fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory.
What this ensures that prices are reasonable and no companies are permitted to charge a company of one more than the other.
Apple licensed a number of Seps owned by Ericsson.
Not only that but also licenses other patents that don’t.
Apple is thought to want to negotiate lower costs when the license ends.
When the whole battle of Startericsson first sued Apple in October which explained that it was not happy about the apple reducing the cost of royalties.
Apple responded with his own setting in December where he accused Ericsson using strong arm tactics to get an updated patent.
An Ericsson spokesman, according to the Reuters report, said, “Because the previous agreement has expired, and we cannot reach an agreement on the requirements and scope of new licenses, Apple now uses our technology without a license”.
What is at stake in a legal battle? Initially, Ericsson had sued Apple in the US and one European country again.
However, now it has filed lawsuits against Apple in the Netherlands, Brazil and Germany.
Ericsson argues that Apple has violated its patent around 4G and 5G Tech used in most iPhones.
Apple also alleged that Ericsson had violated its patent and was looking for a ban on importing technology based on the patent.
Ericsson might look for an iPhone import ban for accusing a violation of patents by Apple.
What happened in the Nextsince licensing contract between the two companies has not been updated and the lawsuits submitted cross continents, it can be a long-drawn battle.
In particular, Ericsson has an old legal dispute with Samsung also for a global patent license.
This problem was completed last year in May 2021 but after a long legal battle.
