New Delhi: A broken fire in the new Lajpat Rai market across the Red Fortress at Chandni Chowk here at the time on Thursday, said Delhi fire service officials.
There were no casualties in the incident, they said.
The fire swallowed around 60 ‘khokas’ (kiosks) on the market, police said.
A call on fire in the new Lajpat Rai market was received at around 4:43 a.m.
and 13 fire tenders rushed to the place, said Delhi fire service director Atul Garg.
The fire has been watered and the cooling process is underway, he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said, “The fire was controlled at 7 in the morning.
Prima Facie, a short circuit seems to have caused a fire.
Legal action will begin according to complaints.” The new Lajpat Rai market is famous for its clothes and equipment.
Rajiv Aggarwal, who runs a travel agent in the Central Market in Chandi Chowk, claims this is the first time a fire broke out in the new 50-year-old New Lajpat Rai market.
“The market has around 65 ‘khokas’.
All stores are involved in the clothing sales business.
All of these small shops have been completely destroyed and almost no items left,” he said.
“Even the iron box where these clothes are stored under ‘Khoka’ have been fully destroyed,” he said.
Items claimed by Aggarwal worth Lakh Rupee were burned in fire.
