New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday said foreign students got a ticket to the PhD course only if the seat was left empty after offered to Indian candidates who had appeared for the Varsity entrance examination.
The statement came a few days after three students from Afghanistan had written to the representative of Chancellor Jnu M Jagadesh Kumar urged him to facilitate the process for Afghan students to get a ticket to the PhD course after the “deteriorating” situation in their country.

The National Test Agency conducts computer-based tests (CBT) to enter into their academic programs.
The school and special centers are JNU testing Viva Voce anywhere, he said.
The election of the final candidate to enter various study programs was created “based on the achievements between candidates in their respective categories based on their performance in CBT and Viva Voce (anywhere prescribed),” he said.
Significantly, PhD acceptance in JNU is based on Gazette Notification of the 2016 University Grant Commission and the number of seats in each category is repaired and announced properly in advance in the prospectus, the statement said.
The number of PhD seats is based on vacancies available with each faculty member and research resources available.
JNU does not have the authority to make a Supernumerary PhD position while the supernumerary position is possible in non-PhD programs, said the university.
“In accordance with the university acceptance policy, JNU allocates a five percent of the supernumerary seats for widows / wards of armed forces personnel who are killed / defects in action or during peace time to enter the university program.”
“This supernumerary seat is intended for the UG / PG / part time program, but not in B.Tech, M.SC (biotechnology), M.SC (science calculation and integrative), MBA and Ph.D program,” Varsity was said.
