Geneva: Germany and France said they and other European Union countries have nominated Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from Ethiopia for the second term as the Director General of the World Health Organization.
It marked the first time that a candidate for the top work in the UN health agency has not been nominated by the country of origin.
Tedro, who left with his first name, has been in the global spotlight of the organization’s response to the Coronavirus Pandemic for the past 19 months – the epocal crisis that exceeded all the other things throughout his term starting in 2017.
Election for the next WHO Director General, who brought his tenure Five years, occurred at the annual assembly meeting of the next agency in May.
Tedro has run over the Ethiopian government from Prime Minister of Prize winner Nobel Peace Abiy Ahmed for his concern about murder and other human rights violations in his home region, Tigray.
Previous Tedro was the top official at the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, once a dominant member of the coalition that runs Ethiopia but is now determined by the national government as a terrorist group.
Tedro also served as Minister of Health and abroad in the previous Ethiopian government.
French and German diplomatic missions to UN agencies in Geneva announced their support for Tedros on their Twitter bait after the deadline for nomination for the Director General’s post ended on Thursday.
On his website, WHO said it did not plan to announce a complete list of candidates until November, but some diplomatic officials had suggested that he had no competition.
A diplomatic official in Geneva, spoke on anonymous terms because he was not authorized to speak publicly about this problem, said 15 other European Union members joined the Tedro nomination.
Macharia Kamau, the main secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in neighboring Ethiopia, Kenya, tweeted that his country supports Tedros – Africa first to lead WHO.
“Kenya supports the continuity of African leadership which is exemplary in the global global health organization helmet, and will work towards that awareness,” he tweeted.
The WHO, under Tedro, was under the crodismonism with the US Trump US government on charges of mischievous steps in response to Covid-19 and excessive willingness to praise China in the initial phase of the stake that first appeared in Wuhan.
