Poinguinim: Locals have expressed fear of leachate from a garbage processing plant (GTP) in Dumanem in Canacona, maybe wash to rice fields and water bodies below and pollute them.
In 2019, Leachi from GTP was drained during heavy rainfall into rivulet, carrying garbage to the Agonda River.
Sawah in the surrounding area was also contaminated by Leachi in 2019.
The problem was also witnessed the rainy season and this could be a regular feature during heavy rains, local residents said.
There is a place to live located almost with a distance from Dump and the authorities be warned.
Come of the monsoon, the smell is reduced but the leachate produced from the trash mound that is not treated in the processing plant flows to the edge of the road to Rivulet Dumanem, which then starts to the agonda river and then to the Arab Sea, pollutes all of these water bodies, said locals.
Cangkona City Council Chairman Mario Simon Rebello, said he was aware of untreated garbage problems and waste have been covered and tied with qualified plastic sheets so the problem was not repeated as in 2019.
“People from agoniny and vininity dump trash at any time at the entrance GTP, which is sometimes lying there and washed through drainage and flushed to the rivulet dumanem and then to the agonda river.
This problem must be handled immediately after the rain and stop the illegal disposal at the entrance, “Rebello said.
He said at this time, there was no leachate that was seen flushing into the body of the water because the dump was covered safely by plastic.
