Madikeri: In a rare movement, the Gram Panchayat rejuvenates old lakes at Shanivarsanthe.
According to GP officials, this lake is polluted because of waste disposed of villagers and waste entering the body of the water.
Previously it was called Makkala Katte Kere (Bund Lake’s children), it was one of the oldest lakes in the region.
Then, then known as Gangappa Master Lake, named after former TMC President Gangappa Karkera.
During his term as president, he has regulated the lake every year.
However, the proposal to establish a park around the lake has never materialized.
When some buildings and houses occupy the surrounding area, the debris of construction continued to be thrown away at the lake’s place, polluting further.
Because of lack of maintenance, the lake is covered by bushes and weeds.
“Almost 1Aacre of Land that surrounds the lake will be developed as a mini park under the Mahatma National Rural Work Guarantee Scheme (MGNREG) at a cost of Rs 10 Lakh,” Revealed Gram Panchayat Pdo Medappa.
