VADODARA: Force forces such as security guards, guards, coast guards, police and army personnel can look forward to a lightweight, easy to use body area, cost effective and fire resistant when they do their duties.
Researchers from the MS Technical Engineering Department of the University of Technology and Techniques have developed a piercing / trim resistant cloth that not only protects their bodies but also soft and comfortable to wear.
Armor body which is currently available is quite large, expensive and often uncomfortable for security personnel.
“Armor body which is currently available is made of complex polymers or Kevlar (para-aramid).
We have combined Kevlar with glass cloth to make it light and more flexible,” said Dr.
Hireni Mankodi, Associate Professor who along with his team of students – Kushik Velari and Aparna Nerurkar has developed new fabrics.
“The fabric is also fireproof makes it safe for security personnel if they face acid bottles or gasoline bombs that are lobok on them during riots by hordes of violence,” he said.
Stab-proof fabrics developed by researchers using composite fabrics can reduce the price of 40-45%.
“The design of this piercing fabric will be able to reduce costs.
If this structure is used instead of the structure of the full aramid, it will prove very important commercially,” he said.
Citing an example, he said that if the battle of the current body is valuable anywhere in the range of Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,000 per piece, the body armor developed commercially with new cloth will cost around Rs 5,000.
Besides saving costs, the body’s armor will also be light.
“The weight of the body’s armor is currently in the range of 4.5 kg to 6.5 kg while the front and rear body armor developed using this cloth comes in the range of 3 kg to 3.5 kg,” he said.
Composite fabric has been tested for its performance against stab / slash.
“We have also developed instruments to measure stabbing resistance so as measuring the power of the impact that works on samples in real time.
This instrument is in the patent process,” he said.
“Even at a striking energy level starting from 20 Joules (J) up to 40 J, there are no injuries observed in fabric when stabbing.
The instrument itself can measure the impact of up to 200 kg,” he said.
The researchers want to prepare composite fabrics to provide three levels of protection.
Organizational R & D Premier countries such as research and defense development organizations usually design NIJ standards, the only standard that is accepted nationally for the armor body imposed by law enforcement personnel.
