High water closes Rhine in South Germany for shipping

Hamburg: The parts of the Rhine River in South Germany are still closed for delivery on Tuesday after rising water after rain and storm last week, the authorities said.
The water level falls but the river may not be fully open to land shipments until Thursday, the environment of the neighborhood in the South Germany state of Rhineland Palatinate said.
Southern Rhine rose last week after recording rainfall and floods that killed at least 160 people in Germany’s worst natural disasters in almost six decades.
The shipping of the Rhine River still stops around Maxau and Speyer in South Germany, said the Waterways Inland German Navigation Agency.
High water means the ship does not have enough space to sail under the bridge and blockage prevents the ship from sailing to Switzerland.
Dry weather on Monday and on Tuesday morning means shipping in the northern sector of the river from Mannheim to Duisburg operating normally, he said.
Rhine is an important delivery route for commodities including minerals, coal and oil products such as heating oil, grains and animal feed.
