Geneva: An independent UN expert on Monday highlighted fears that activists in China were being harassed and sentenced to a long prison or arrest of a house.
Because of doing “peaceful human rights work”, individuals are rejected access to medical care, lawyers and their families, high commissioners for human rights (UN human rights) in a statement.
“Condemn human rights defenders, especially for the long term in prison because of their peaceful human rights work, abuse them in custody and fail to give them adequate medical care is something that cannot continue,” said UN Special Reporters on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor.
“I have received countless reports show that the persecution of human rights defenders in Chinese prisoners remain endemic and may amount to torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatments, despite a large number of documentation and recommendations from the UN mechanism for many years, including From the committee on torture.
“He said some defenders, like Gao Zhisheng, had forcibly disappeared, while some others, such as Guo Hongwei, had died in prison.
Lawlor said he was aware of at least 13 defenders of human rights that had been sentenced to false charges, such as ‘picking quarrels’ or ‘provoking’, up to 10 years or more in prison peacefully defend the rights of others.
“Exposing arbitrary prison sentences, especially long-term prison sentences, to defenders in connection with their human rights work is an unacceptable effort to silence them and their efforts, and to intimidate and prevent others from doing this legitimate job, “Lawlor said.
“Many are rejected access to the lawyers they choose and to their families.
In some cases, the same lawyer and their relatives are also targeted.” I called China’s authority to immediately free this human rights defense, and confirm it.
They can continue significant and necessary human rights work without fear of retribution in any form, including their relatives.
“Experts come into contact with the Chinese authorities about this issue.
