Rome: Hundreds of migrants descend from the Humanitarian rescue vessel in Augusta, Sicily on Friday after Italy offered a safe port in response to warnings that food was running out and tensions increased on board.
The SOS Mediterranee Rescue Group said that the sick and young was the first of 572 migrants who got off the ship, the Viking Sea.
Among them were men in wheelchairs and other small children.
Everything is being tested for Coronavirus on land.
Italy had agreed on Thursday to let the ship anchored in Augusta after the crew reported the deteriorating conditions on the boat.
The Viking Sea said five requests for maritime authorities in Italy and Malta to assign safety ports had been fulfilled.
The European Commission said that Friday welcomed Italy’s decision to let the ship anchored and added that it was prepared to coordinate the voluntary relocation of migrants to other European countries.
A spokesman for the Adalbert Commission of Jahnz urged EU member countries to step “in the spirit of solidarity and share the responsibility of ” to manage the flow of migration in Europe.
