CHENNAI: Hyundai’s Creta has emerged as the top seller in May 2021 with 7,527 units, just ahead of Maruti Swift which reported 7,005 units in wholesales.
Swift has been in the top 10 best-seller list since 2008.
“Maruti Suzuki dominates the top 10 model list and Swift has been part of that list for more than a decade moving up to occupy the top slot in 2021,” said Ravi Bhatia, president, JATO Dynamics.
“The SUV segment has been doing well but May numbers were skewed by production issues.” The pandemic and lockdown affected wholesales of both Creta and Swift — the former sold 12,463 units in April while the latter sold 18,316 units.
Hyundai officials refused to comment while Maruti said that May “was not a normal production or sales month” (with local lockdowns in most parts of the country) and “any conclusions drawn are misleading”.
“Swift continues to be the country’s best-selling car with over 25000 units sold between April-May’21 period and the only closest competition to country’s best-selling car is our own premium hatchback Baleno with over 21,000 units, WagonR with over 20,000 units and Alto with over 20,500 units sold between April-May’21 period,” said Shashank Srivastava, senior ED at Maruti Suzuki.
