New Delhi: A 19-year-old IIT student was arrested from Bihar on Thursday for allegedly stalking female students and school teachers famous here and uploaded their morphed pictures on social media, police said.
Mahavir, who came from Patna, pursued B.Tech from IIT-Kharagpur.
According to the police, he harassed more than 50 female students and famous school teachers in North Delhi.
They say Mahavir uses the application for fake caller IDs and virtual numbers on WhatsApp to contact the victims.
To hide his identity, he also uses the sound change application.
He posted photos of morph of victims on the fake Instagram profile created by them with their names, police said.
The problem was revealed after complaints received from the school government on Wednesday about cyber stalkers.
According to complaints, the defendant followed small girls on social media and sent them to order on WhatsApp.
He called the teachers from various international numbers and harassed it.
IIT students joined the WhatsApp group made for online classes and also entered the class, the complaints stated.
Some photos of Morphed School students are circulated on the social media platform, he added.
The case was registered under the Indian Code in the Indian Criminal Code at the Civil Line Police Station and the District Cyber Cell Unit was issued for technical assistance and then the relevant part of the Pocso Law and the IT Law was added in this case, Deputy Commissioner of Police ( North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said.
As part of an investigation, the police questioned school students, their parents and teachers.
Police officials said they managed to identify 33 Virtual NoSApp numbers, five Instagram profiles and several calls were made using the Fake caller ID application by the defendant.
“Our team analyzes the details of the IP WhatsApp log, Instagram and fake IDs used to create a social media account and identify the defendant as Mahavir.
He then traced to Patna at Bihar where he was arrested,” Kalsi said.
While analyzing the cellphone number, the police knew that the defendant had contacted one of the victims three years ago and had stalked and harassed it since then, he said.
