WASHINGTON: The head of the IMF economist Gita Gopinath will leave his job in January next year and return to the prestigious Harvard University, according to global financial institutions.
The 49-year-old Indian-American economist has joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as chief economist in January 2019.

Born in December 1971 for Malayalee’s parents, Gopinath has his school in Kolkata and graduated from Lady Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi.
He did a master of Delhi’s economic school and from the University of Washington.
Gopinath held a Ph.D degree in the economic field of Princeton University in 2001 and he was guided by Kenneth Rogoff, Ben Bernanke and Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas.
He joined Chicago University in 2001 as assistant professor before moving to Harvard in 2005.
He became a tenor professor there in 2010.
He is the third woman in Harvard’s history to become the first economic professor and India since Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen to hold that position.
