Panaji: Although not much said about the alleged land fraud in the state, the cave police data revealed the truth that was surprising.
There are 128 land fraud cases registered in the state in the past 10 years and from this, more than half are in Porvorim and Mapaaa from Bardez Taluka.
Of the 128 cases of land fraud registered in the state, 73 were reported in the jurisdiction of the Mapusa and Porvorim police station.
At an average of 10 cases of land fraud are reported every year throughout the state.
A senior police officer said that most of the property owners did not realize that their qualities had sold or the name of the property owner had been changed.
The officer did not rule out the possibility of syndicates operating in the state to reach their land who did not live in the state.
“Residents who live abroad and those who have unattended property in Goa are on an organized syndicate radar that specializes in achieving ancestral property,” said the senior police officer.
In most cases the defendant identified land and made paper ownership of fake property.
This property was then sold to a defendant’s colleague before the same property was sold finally to a third party.
The police said that some people had been able to stop the transaction when they read the notification in the local newspaper people claiming property.
The officer said that in addition to criminal complaints there was also a pending civil suit before the court in case of fake property ownership.
In many cases, property owners who actually know about properties sold when buyers from outside the country start some construction on the ground or when the renovation work starts at ancestral house.
