New Delhi: India Botanical Survey (BSI), the country’s top taxonomy research organization, has found 267 plant species.
Of the 202 new plant species for science while 65 others have never been reported from India.
The discovery of the BSI 2020 factory, released by the Ministry of Environment on Monday, showed new discoveries to Indian Flora including 119 species of seed plants, 57 fungal species, 44 species of moss, 21 species of microbes, five species, five species of Bryophytes and three species of allies of ferns and ferns and ferns .
BSI each year compiles and documents the discovery of a new factory, plays a central role to fulfill the global commitment of India about comprehensive documentation and identification of state plant diversity.
India is a signatory to ‘Convention on Biological Diversity’ (CBD) and is committed to working towards the global strategy of plant conservation.
India has around 45,000 plant species, which have been identified and classified, which accounts for around 7% of the total plant species in the world.
About 28% of Indian plants are endemic to the country.
According to BSI, India Flora is mostly concentrated in the three main centers of floristic diversity, namely, Himalaya, Western Ghats and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which are part of four of the 34 ‘global biodiversity hotspots’.
Officials in the Ministry of Environment turned that the Kuncian Covid-19-Linked and the whole pandemic situation had limited field visits scientists and therefore the number of plant discoveries was relatively less in 2020 compared to the previous year when around 350 species were found and documented.
