MANGALORE: KMC Hospital has completed the treatment of a patient suffering from severe Covid pneumonia.
Raghuveer, 62, was presented with complaints of fever of six days’ duration, cough with expectoration and breathlessness since two days at the time of his admission.
He was admitted to the hospital on April 29.
Dr Basavaprabhu, Internal Medicine, KMC Hospital, said, “When he was admitted into casualty, he had a respiratory rate of close to 45, heart rate of around 120, and saturation at room air was around 72 – 75.
We did a COVID test and the report came out to be positive.
The CT scan report showed a CT score of 22/25.
He was suffering from severe Covid pneumonia and was shifted into ICU.
He was also diabetic and hypertensive with uncontrolled sugars.
We started NRBM with 10 litres of oxygen, Remdesivir, steroids, and heparin.
For the next 2-3 days his oxygen requirements went on going up.
The patient was changed to non-invasive ventilation but he was not able to maintain the saturation so he was intubated on May 2.
Throughout his treatment, he had fluctuations in blood pressure and variations in saturation.
With the efforts of our intensive care team and Flu team we were able to extubate him on May 15 and we could shift him out of the ICU.” Subsequently, the Covid report came negative and the patient was shifted to the non- covid ward and his physiotherapy treatment was continued, especially the respiratory physiotherapy.
In the next 10 days, he gradually recovered and was able to maintain around 95% to 96% saturation even with 1-2 litres of oxygen.
The family decided to continue the treatment with home oxygen and physiotherapy and he was discharged in the last week of May, Dr Basavaprabhu, said.
