Chikkamagaluru: For Somashekhar and his family, the lock is a nightmare more than one way.
The 25-year-old who married a Dalit woman was ostracized at Sahyadripura near Lingadadaalli.
The villagers, who interact with him have been threatened with a fine of RS 5,000.
Somashekhar who was annoyed had threatened to enter Christianity if the village did not lift the boycott.
In 2019, Somashekhar, who came from the uppaar caste, married Mahalakshmi, 23, a girl Dalit from Tumakuru.
The family did not have objections and the couple worked in a factory in Bengaluru.
Their problem began when in 2021 during the second wave of Lockdown the factory where they worked was closed.
Unemployed, the pair returned to their village, Sahyadripura.
A few days after they landed at home, the village elders of his community asked Somashekhar and his family not to interact with them when he married a girl Dalit.
They announce a fine of RS 5,000 on anyone who interacts with them or invites them for functions or marriage.
They have been forbidden to enter the village temple too.
Somashekhar said, “I married a woman I loved.
If the boycott continues, we will enter Christianity.” He said his village had 60 families belonging to the UPPAAR community.
Right-wing activists are now approaching the district administration looking for resolutions for the problem.
Deputy Commissioner Chikkamagaluru Kn Ramesh said that the department authorities concerned had visited the village and asked them to lift the dictate boycott.
“If they don’t listen to the authorities, the action will be taken against them,” DC said.
