Kolkata: The days before the civilian election, the police arrested a young man and grabbed a bag containing a currency record worth Rs 1 Crore from a young man while walking along the sidewalk Park Street on Tuesday morning.
Joint operation was carried out by the Special Task Force of the Kolkata Police (STF) and Park Street Police Station at around 8:30 a.m.
According to the police, they have a tip about a man who moves with a large amount of cash and that his movements are suspicious.
“A team of officers intercepted the man and found cash with him.
Even though there was a repeat question, he could not give the right reply to the source of money or where he took it and then arrested and the money was confiscated,” said a senior police officer Kolkata.
The police identified the man as Pritam Pal (27), a resident of Maheshtala.
He was produced before the Bankshall court in Central Kolkata and returned to police custody.
The police also warned the income tax department about seizures.
The police said they suspected that the money was transported from one place to another illegally, perhaps over the hawala.
The police said they were increasingly investigating if cash would be used in the upcoming civil elections on December 19.
