Kolkata: Metro on Friday violated 4.5 lakh passengers, only four days after passing the 4 lakh mark and less than a month since it reached 3.5 lakh daily passengers.
Authorities connect a steep leap on foot to the return of the token system and also get ready to rush heavy in the celebration season along the north-south line.
The Metro on Christmas Eve recorded 4,52,835 passengers, reached a 4.5 lakh milestone in the Kavi Subhas-Dakshineswar corridor.
On Monday, 4.05,596 riding, and the utility crossed the 4 lakh mark.
On November 28, two days after the token was reintroduced, the Metro registered 3.57,764 footsteps.
And now, with people who rejoiced on the lane of life transportation during the celebration, Metro Railway has decided to add four trips on weekdays from Monday, and 10 on Saturdays from Christmas.
But officials said daily services might increase to maintain distance.
From Monday, the utility will have 276 daily services, only 12 less than pre-pandemic trips when around 6 lakh to 6.2 lakh people take the metro north-south every day.
Officials said the North-South corridor could reach prapandemic passengers faster than expected.
“Even since the corridor extension to Dakshineswar in February, the South Metro has served a large number of commuters from the area around Kolkata,” said an official.
The 4-lakh mark was reached 20 days after the token returned.
It took almost two months to reach 3 lakh from 2.5 lakh daily daily.
