The couple had lived in a small camping car for a month, constantly brushing volcanic ash from the vehicle.
“One day exploded there, another ventilation opened here, it was just sadness and lived in fear, waiting and praying to stop erupting,” Cruz said.
“And it’s very sad for those who lose their homes.” The flow of red-hot lava has swallowed nearly 800 hectares (2000 hectares) of land, destroying around 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations since the eruption began on September 19.
More than 6,000 must leave their homes.
Volcanology say they cannot predict how long the volcano will continue to expel liquid magma.
After being ordered to flee, Cruz and Gonzalez first stayed at the agriculture relative and then took the caravan to the parking lot where they could get fresh water and a little electricity.
They now want to rent an apartment that accepts pets.
“We don’t know when it will stop, that’s the problem.
It’s nature and we have to deal with it, it’s bigger than us,” Gonzalez said.
Adding Cruz: “The future is trying to delete what we have (items) that we have and to end, then return to the life we have before, even if it will be more difficult.”
