Bhubaneswar: A day after arresting four people from West Bengal for allegedly stealing cash from drug stores in the city, Komisianca police on Friday cases were registered with the owner of two hotels to provide protection to the defendant.
Although the authority of the two hotels reportedly did not realize the criminal motives of the defendants, they had landed in trouble because they did not share the details of their guests, including the four accused, who had lived in their units, with local police.
Police said all hotels had to be registered under the Sarais Act 1867 and were mandated to share information about their guests with the local police.
In accordance with the SARAIS law, the hotel is an important place and needs to submit a copy of the trade license to the District Administration (Police Commissioner in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack) as proof of their work.
“During the investigation, we found that the defendant lived in a hotel near the train station under the area of the police station.
After a few days, they examined other hotels in the police station Kharavel Nagar.
Authorities in both hotels do not accept the identity card or telephone number accused , “said Deputy Commissioner of the Police of the Uma Shankar Dash.
DCP said it was the responsibility of the hotel to request evidence of valid identity and their guest telephone number.
“Last year, we launched a cellular app, Sarai, to help people upload details of their room and guests.
Previously, they had to visit the local police station every day and submit their guest details manually in a form.

The police said the purpose of storing the hotel guest database was to keep an eye on the lives of suspicious people, mostly anti-social.
The negligence by several hotels has encouraged criminals to commit violations in the past.
