Milton.Wrencemysuru: After facing severe abuse and torture from their son, senior citizens of Mysuru were fortunate enough to receive assistance from national helpline for senior citizens, also called they were tortured.
The couple was tortured for several years before the relatives knocked on the doorsteps of Elder (14567) – Numbe free toll – in September.
The couple received assistance from the Taluk officer, including the local police and finally his son was overthrown from their home.
Like them, as many as 152 senior residents faced by harassment from their family members were given support by activists of the Elder Line throughout Karnataka in the past eight months and their concerns were immediately attended.
Bengaluru overcame the table with 50 cases of senior citizens abuse, followed by a collection with 11 cases, MySuru with eight, Mandya and Shivamogga respectively, Hassan and Dakshina Kannada with four cases each and Dharwad with five cases.
The initiative of the Ministry of Justice and Social Empowerment, Helpline works with the state government and non-profit organizations.
It was operational from May 2021, and was officially launched in October in Karnataka.
In the past eight months, The Elder Line has discussed concerns of more than 5,771 cases of senior citizens, and about 2.6% of them related to harassment, according to abuse, according to statistics.
Another major concern about senior citizens is a legal problem.
A total of 238 senior citizens extended assistance in matters about property share, gift, partition coat, financial problems, and insurance bonds.
About 4.1% of cases related to legal issues of more than 2,000 elderly citizens received Covid support for three months, which included providing information about vaccines, centers, availability of hospital beds, food supply to their doorstep, and downloaded Covid certificates.
Lately, there have been questions about preventive doses.

“There is a need to popularize it so that more citizens benefit,” he said.
“According to our analysis, many senior citizens are not advanced to complain about harassment at home or in the family.
We also face challenges in reaching callers from distant places.” He added.
“Recently, a 102-year-old woman from Gadag was saved with the help of police and other district officials after her family released it at home, accusing him to cause problems.
He is now being treated at a government hospital,” Vijyalakshmi said.
“We have received a letter of appreciation from residents who benefit from us too,” he added.
Team Leader Melwin Fernandez said about 15% of the total cases related to retirement problems.
Helpline extends assistance to people aged 55 years and over.
The majority of callers are senior citizens and in some cases, family members and neighbors have jumped into their help by calling Helpline.
Calls to Helpline Senior citizens that have 1090 attended by the executive line of the elder, which functions starting at 8am to 8:00.
“There is a suggestion to function all the time,” he added.
