Gurugram: A citizen Manesar has been arrested for allegedly trying to extort money from car cleaners who work in the housing community along the south peripheral road.
He threatened brutally struggling car cleaners if they failed to give part of their income to him, police said.
The man has been identified as Gaurav aka Rahil, a resident of Gujjar Bar in Manesar.
According to the police, he used the cellphone he found to separate calls to car cleaners.
He demanded Rs 100 per month for each car they cleaned, said an officer.
The problem was revealed when sector 10 residents filed a police complaint about the ‘misuse’ of the missing telephone three years ago.
He had approached the Sector 10A police station on September 9 and told the police that he had lost a cellphone with a SIM card in August 2018.
On September 5, he knew that his SIM card was used by someone to make extortion calls for car cleaners working at Irao Victory Valley Society in the 67 sector, he told the police.
“When I lost the phone, I did not ask the telecommunications company to stop my cellphone number, thinking that it would be deactivated as soon as I stopped recharging the balance,” said the woman in her complaint.
A pine was immediately registered at the Sector Police Station 65 below 379 (theft) and 384 (extortion) IPC.
After several weeks of investigation, the 40 sector crime unit arrested Gaurav in sector 31 on Tuesday.
“Gaurav said he had picked up the phone from the road.
He began to use a number to make a call of extortion,” said Police spokesman Subhash Becken.
Some car cleaners working in the new sector said they had become victims of such extortion from local thugs.
APSAR Ali, who works as a car washing machine in a housing community in the 110A sector, said he had received a call that threatened from two points.
“The caller asked me to pay a portion of my income.
They threatened to break my bones if I did not obey their instructions,” Ali said.
