Mangaluru: Mangalore University has begun offering counseling services to students from Afghanistan, who looked at the uncertain future with the Taliban to take control of their country.
In Dakshina Kannada was not divided, most Afghan students were on the Mangalore University campus in Konaje.
Campus alone has a total of 53 Afghan students, 18 of them undergraduate students, 13 pursuing postgraduate degrees and 22 are PhD scholars.
Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor P S Yadadithaya said that students were worried about their family at home, because of the ongoing crisis.
“We strive to reach Afghan students for help during this period of crisis.
The university has made a complicated arrangement to help students.
We also offer counseling to them, if they need it.” The University began to welcome international students from the 2014-15 academic year.
The majority of international students have received a ticket to universities under the Indian Council program for Cultural Relations (ICC).
Yadapadithaya said that some Afghan students had graduated from Mangalore University and returned to their country.
Because it was asked about what would be the next action if the crisis continued, and students could not return home? Yadapadithaya said that the university did not have a role to play about visa expirations, and decisions would be taken at the government level.
“At present, we ensure that students are anxious because the crisis is advised and taken care of,” he said.
The source of the university said that Afghan students registered disrupted and felt helpless.
One of the students recently returned to campus, after dropping his family in Afghanistan.
Afghan students and other international students live in private accommodation regulated by the University.
The university also provides transportation and other facilities to them.
Afghan students do not want to talk about the condition of their family in their country.
H S Balal, Pro-Chancellor, Higher Education Manipal Academy, said that 4-5 Afghan students are expected to study in Manipal under the scheme.
“There might be delays in their arrival, or a change of plan because of the current crisis,” he said.
