Guwahati: More than 50 people, including students and faculty members, has been tested positive for Covid-19 in Iit-Guwahati for the past six days, forcing the authorities to impose restrictions on campus, an official said on Wednesday.
Nearly 99 percent of cases are people who returned to campus from outside Assam after vacation, said Parmeshwar Iyer, Dean-Pr, Iit-Guwahati.
“More than 50 cases of Covid-19 have been detected on campus since December 31.
Among them are faculty members and five family members, and other staff members.
The rest are students,” said Iyer.
Except for faculty members and their families, all patients nested in the center of quarantine in the Institute’s guest house on campus, said Iyer.
“When the parents of faculty members, mother-in-law and young men were tested positively, they would rather be treated in hospitals.
They are currently undergoing treatment in Gautati Medical College and hospitals,” he said.
“We really monitor the situation and take all the necessary steps.
The District Authority has given us extra resources to increase the testing process,” he added.
Restrictions have been applied at the hostel, which makes it mandatory for students to take permission before leaving, said Iyer.
“No new students are allowed to enter the campus until further notice,” he said.
