Kongsberg: The Norwegian court will decide on Friday how long a man who suffered killed five people with a bow and arrow and other weapons at first can be detained, police said.
Espen Andersen Braathen, a 37-year-old Danish citizen who has lived for most of his life in the city of Kongsberg Norwegian where the attack took place on Wednesday, has admitted killing the victims, sympathizers said.
Braathen, a conversion to Islam who has shown signs of radicalization, continues to go berserk through a small town, attacking people in stores and on the streets and in their homes in “acts of terror” which is clear by police.
Four women and one person, all aged between 50 and 70 years, were killed in what appeared to be a random attack that lasted 35 minutes before the police arrested him.
The other three, including a police officer who did not work, was injured.
Braathen is believed to have acted alone and work with the investigation, police said.
He would not oppose the request to hold him in detention, his lawyer told reporters on Thursday.
The trial in this case is still more than months.
“He will also be the target of full psychiatric evaluation,” said his lawyer, Fredrik Neumann.
The results of the evaluation can determine whether the risk of Braathen was sentenced to prison, or whether he would commit to psychiatric care.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, who served on Thursday after winning the election last month, will visit Kongsberg on Friday along with the Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl.
Death tolls were the worst of any attack in Norway since 2011, when extremists were far away Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people, most of them were teenagers in the youth camp.
The attack took place in the “big area” Kongsberg, a city around 28,000 people in the southeast Norway, 68 km (42 miles) from the capital, Oslo.
