Chennai: breast cancer may be immediately detected at the initial stage using a blood test, the results of clinical trials by the Cancer Institute in Adyar have shown.
If a larger clinical trial confirms this finding, this blood test may not only replace mammograms and physical examinations, but will also help in diagnosis and early care, improve results.
Blood tests look for three gene markers in cell-free DNA taken from women’s plasma, and identify all stages of cancer, including those at the initial stage when locked in a (non-invasive) channel, scientists said.
“In patients with breast cancer, there is a reduction in the expression of three protective genes called SostDC1, WIF1 and Dact2 because the mechanism is called the promoter methylation.
When the test ensures a substantial ‘methylation’ in the gene, it returns positive,” said Senior Scientist Dr.
Thangarajan Rajkumar, said who heads the Department of the Molecular Oncology of the Institute.
“In our study, all women test results with breast cancer returned positive.
Nine of 100 healthy people can be called positive, and they may need additional tests before negatively declared.
So, the sensitivity is 100% and the specificity is close to 91%,” he said.
The study was conducted in 218 women who suffered from various stages of breast cancer (including non-invasive), 240 healthy and other women with non-cancerous tumors.
The results of the study have been published in scientific journal reports.
“At least 16 women have initial stage cancer and this test also detects them.
