Chandigarh: The first case of Omicron City continues to be quarantined in a civil hospital, Manimajra, because his relatives have been tested positive for Covid.
Their samples have also been sent to Delhi for the sequencing of all genomes.
The 20-year-old Italian returnee was tested on Sundays and the report was negative.
In accordance with the protocol, if the sample is negative after 11 days of RT-PCR test, patients are quarantined.
But he was still in hospital because five of his family had contracted a virus.
“The patient is still without symptoms.
But he is under institutional quarantine,” said Director UT, Health Services, Dr.
Suman Singh.
While five of the seven contacts have been tested positive, one negative and the report of others is awaited.
The Returnee was fully vaccinated with Pfizer and had landed in India on November 22.
The first RT-PCR test is negative for Covid.
After eight quarantine days, the sample was tested positively.
The report received on Saturday night confirmed him to be the first case of a new strain here.
Public health experts feel that although it is uncertain how great the tension is new, the transmission is many times higher than the Delta variant.
“We have seen a breakthrough infection even with Delta variants.
So, vaccination cannot stop the infection completely in all strains,” said an expert.
